A trailer jack is used to attach the trailer arm to the tow vehicle. It uses a retractable arm that has a wheel on the bottom of it to lift and lower the trailer. The trailer jack will usually have a hand crank. This enables it to lift the heavy trailer and its contents upwards. Whenever you have a trailer that does not have a trailer jack you should install one so as to make it easier to hitch and unhitch the trailer. Whenever you are ready to install a trailer jack make sure that you have a helper ready to assist you.
The first thing you will want to do whenever you are ready to install a trailer jack is to put wheel chocks underneath each of the tires on your trailer. This will keep your trailer from moving whenever you are installing the trailer jack. You also need to hitch the trailer to your tow vehicle in order to raise it up during the installation process.
Once your trailer is in place you will want to put the attachment bracket under the trailer arm. It should be between one third to halfway between the arm and the trailer. Now find the jackscrew holes that are located underneath of your trailer. Align the mounting bracket holes with the trailer armholes. Have your assistant hold the bracket in place as you do this.
Screw the attachment bolts to your bracket. You will need an adjustment wrench in order to do this. It is important to tighten these bolts as much as possible.
Now you can mount the jack onto the bracket. Each company that manufactures jacks will have different mechanisms and attachment points. Therefore you will need to read and follow the instructions that came with your kit. At the same time it is also important to make sure that the jack is facing the trailer so that it will be easier to fold and retract the jack onto the bracket.
The last thing you need to do is tighten up all of the bolts for the jack. This will secure it to the bracket. You should also test the jack. To do this, unhinge and push the jack to the ground before retracting it. Doing so will ensure that the mechanisms have been properly installed.
